Edgartown: Gracious Historical Hospitality
The town of Edgartown is one of the oldest on the Island. The passing centuries have left behind their legends of New World discovery, American Revolution participation, whaling-era hey-days and pop-culture for present day locals and travellers alike.
Walking the narrow streets, it’s easy to picture horse-drawn carriages clattering along to Island destinations. Looking up, towards the roof tops of two-hundred year old houses, the image of a woman bracing her hands on the railing of the Widow's Walk as she scans the sea for the first sight of a returning ship lies is just beyond the corner of your eye. Perhaps, as you meander down the sidewalks and pause in front of store-fronts, a sense of déjà vu will linger long enough for you to remember that memorable line from one of the many films for which this town has served as a backdrop.
Preserving the town as it was, the inns, hotels, bed-and-breakfasts and guest houses have taken on the responsibility to translate history's legacies into a language of gracious hospitality without compromising a traveller’s comfort. Modern amenities abound within the framework of historically registered buildings, and today's technology has made the natural beauty of this port town accessible to every visitor. Bridal parties, corporate retreats, family vacations and romantic getaways have given this town a reputation of being one of the most sought-after destinations in the world. Edgartown's popularity is only matched by other towns on this Island. Annual events and seasonal celebrations dot the calendar of this year ‘round town.
